There are several possible party members available in Baldur’s Gate 3, including Minsc who players may recognize from previous installments in the franchise. Minsc and his hamster, Boo, can be a valuable member of the team, but unfortunately recruiting him will require quite a bit of work.
To start off, players will not have the option of recruiting Minsc until reaching the third act of the game. However, that does not mean that there is nothing to be done prior as recruiting and keeping another character, Jaheira, a multi-class fighter/druid in Baldur’s Gate 3, alive in Act Two is paramount to recruiting Minsc.
The High Harper Quest
Once reaching Act 3 in Baldur’s Gate 3, Jaheira’s High Harper quest will begin. The first step will be to visit Danthelon’s Dancing Axe in Wyrm’s Crossing, specifically the basement where the party will meet the Harpers. Danthelon, himself will be holding the key to the basement, so speak with him to obtain it.
After handling the situation in the basement, speak with Jaheira to get the next objective which is to seek out some more information. In this case, that means having a conversation with Nine-Fingers Keene at the Guildhall. For those who have never ventured to the Guildhall, it is in the sewers under the Basilisk Gate Waypoint.
There are several different entrances into the sewer, even one that can lead the party through the front door if they head out to the beach to help some Guild members first. The Guildhall is also where Mol can be found in Baldur’s Gate 3, for those who are searching for her, so this is a good time to wrap up that quest as well. Keene will let the party know Minsc is alive, but with the Cult of the Absolute that is causing problems all over the city.
Be sure to check with other members of the Guildhall for any additional information. Two halflings outside the Guildhall can be overheard chatting about the Stone Lord, Minsc’s alias. After some sweet-talking, they will reveal that the Minsc is heading to the Counting House.
Where To Find Minsc
Once reaching the Counting House, head inside to find a couple of tellers and approach the only available one. Through some conversation, the teller will reveal that someone armed has just entered the vault. After some convincing, the teller will permit the party into the vault as well without having to cause a scene, otherwise, the party may have to cause some casualties in order to reach the vault.
Whatever the method, follow the path down to the vault, which will also include solving a vault puzzle in Baldur’s Gate 3. The answer can be found on the top floor of the bank in the Head Clerk’s office, but it’s guarded, so be prepared.
After solving the puzzle, the door will open and the party can head inside. A fight will begin after the quick cutscene concludes. Following that, step into the vault to search for clues that could lead to where Minsc went. Use a perception check to reveal that the sewers are the best place to check. Minsc’s hideout can be found there, so it’s time to head back down.
Go north from the Sewer Waypoint and be sure the party has taken time to rest in Baldur’s Gate 3 as there will be a couple more fights up ahead. However, be sure to toggle non-lethal combat on as Minsc cannot be recruited to the party if he’s dead. After altering the water pressure and temperature valves, the door to the Abandoned Cistern should open.
How To Recruit Minsc
Once the fight begins, be sure to take out Boss Friol of the Zhentarim, otherwise, she will sneak out and disappear with a hefty amount of the bank’s gold. After knocking Minsc out and defeating the other enemies, Jaheira will push for the emperor to offer protection to Minsc as well. If he refuses, select the dialogue option in Baldur’s Gate 3 that is persisting that he extend protection to Minsc. Following that, the emperor will insist that Minsc is unpredictable and a liability. Respond with either of the first two dialogue options. The emperor will scoff at the idea that Jaheira would risk everyone to save Minsc, so reply with the dialogue option that lets him know this is serious, and she’s not budging.
Try keeping Rakath Glitterbeard alive so that he can provide a quest in which he will ask the party to retrieve some gold for him. It’s not required, but the quest he will offer will provide a significant reward, a very rare piece of light armor that is locked away in a secret location within the vault. So he’s worth keeping around if that piece of armor may be of any interest to you.
Finally, he will agree to extend his protection and things will finally ease over a bit. Minsc will then engage players in a little bit of Baldur’s Gate 3‘s dialogue, but no answers given here will affect whether Minsc is able to join the party or not at this point, so respond as you see fit.
Once the conversation concludes, Minsc will go smash some walls in order to find Boo, his “miniature giant space hamster”, who was locked away by the Cult of the Absolutists. At this point, the party will finally have the option to recruit Minsc, and Boo, if they would like, or send him away if there’s no desire to make him part of your Baldur’s Gate 3 team.
